We are happy to announce that POP3 technology is now available to Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. If you don’t see your country or region in this list, never fear, we’ll be rolling POP3 out to more parts of the world later this year.
UPDATE: As of March 12, 2009, POP3 access is now available to Hotmail users WORLDWIDE.
What is POP3? It is a protocol that allows almost any e-mail software program that you’ve installed on your mobile phone or PC* to get messages from your e-mail inbox on the web and deliver them in the designated program.
Although you always could access Hotmail on your web-enabled mobile phone by going to mobile.live.com, now that Hotmail has POP3, you can get to it more conveniently using the e-mail software on your PC or mobile device* such as a Windows Mobile phone, iPhone, or BlackBerry.
When you set up Hotmail in the e-mail program on your PC or mobile device, you may be asked for the following information:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes
In addition to POP3, Microsoft offers additional technologies that can provide you with an even richer experience of your e-mail. Try viewing your Hotmail using Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Office Outlook via the Outlook Connector, or Windows Live for Windows Mobile phone.

Has anyone been able to make this work well (sync correctly) on a blackberry? I\’m forwarding all my emails to a gmail account as they have a great blackberry app-I\’d rather just keep using a hotmail version of the same app, however I can\’t find one.

Great job for enabling POP3 and SMTP. But unfortunately Malaysia broadband provider – TM streamyx has blocked the port 25. So we are unable to send mail using that port. Any idea? Thanks
@Kevin Lim:You will have to use your isp\’s smtp server.
why not use other port for SMTP? many ISPs block 25… Yahoo uses 465.
I wonder what will happen if I just use my email client to check hotmail (pop3) without logging into the web mail? Will my account be inactive and delete after xx days?
Was about time. I think M$ lost many users to Google and other POP3-enabled mailproviders because they didn\’t implement it sooner…

For ppl who are to lazy to read the other reactions: if port 25 doesn\’t work, try port 587 for SMTP with TLS or SSL

I\’m currently signed up to a Live account via my University so my end address reads: @live.uwe.ac.uk I tried to set up my mobile e-mail client to connect and it failed is there anything different I should do as I don\’t have the stated address in the blog?C Byrne
